What to do before HVAC Technician arrives:

  • • Safety First! If you are not sure what you are doing is safe – call a professional. If you see oil on the floor, smell gas or see sparks, smoke or fire … STOP! Call for help immediately. Call 911 if you feel it’s an emergency. Call us for service.

Air Conditioners and Heating

Before you call for service, always check ...

  1. Is the thermostat set for the proper service I want, i.e. heat, cool, emergency heat or fan on/off/auto? Is there a display?
  2. Is the fan blowing indoors, when the thermostat is in the fan "ON" mode?
  3. Are the circuit breakers on?
  4. Have you changed your filter?

Gas or Oil Furnaces

Always check and replace dirty filters first.

  1. Is your thermostat set to the heat mode?
  2. Is your thermostat set up high enough so heat will come on?
  3. If you turn your thermostat to fan "ON", does the indoor fan turn on and does air come out?
    • a. If the answer is no , check switches, breakers and fuses
    • b. If the answer is yes, check for fuel

    Oil Furnaces: Do you have fuel in tank?
    Gas Furnaces: Are other gas appliances working?

  4. Call for service.

Heat Pumps - Heating

Always check and replace dirty filters first.

  1. Is your thermostat set to heat?
  2. Is your thermostat set high enough so heat will come on
  3. If you turn your thermostat to fan "ON", does the indoor fan turn on and air come out?
    • a. If the answer is no, check switches, breakers and fuses
  4. Is the outside unit running?
  5. If the unit is running, is the unit icing up?
    • a .If yes, is the ice shiny or white and fluffy?
      *If shiny ice call for service.
      *If white and fluffy, run unit for 1-2 hours and recheck.
      Call for service if the unit does not defrost.
    • b .If the unit is not running, check for switches, fuses or breakers.
      *If the switches, fuses or breakers are on, call for service.
      *Switch to emergency heat on your thermostat.

A/C Cooling and Heat Pump Cooling

Always check and replace dirty filters first.

  1. Is your thermostat set on cool?
  2. Is your thermostat set low enough so cool air comes on?
  3. If you turn your thermostat to fan "ON", does the indoor fan turn on and air come out?
  4. If the answer is yes, is the outside unit running?
    • a. If yes, are there any signs of ice?
    • b. If no, check switches, breakers or fuses.
  5. Call for service
